Built by Fincantieri in Italy, the 'Costa
Pacifica' is the second of two new ships
to be delivered to Costa Crociere in less
than one month.
'Costa Pacifica', with a total guest
capacity of 3,780 and 114,500 gross
tonnage, was launched in Genova-Sestri
Ponente on June 27. The launch occurred
simultaneously with the launch of the
2,828-passenger cruise vessel 'Costa
Luminosa' which was launched at
Fincantieri's shipyard in Marghera
(Province of Venice). The launch, as with
their prior simultaneous naming, was a
record-breaking first, celebrated under the
theme "Made in Italy".
'Costa Pacifica's' ship theme is "music",
with an exclusive "sound track" by Maestro
Mauro Pagani and a working onboard
recording studio, and, of course, decks
named after famous Italian composers.
Weighing in at 114,500GRT, she can
accommodate a total of 3,780 guests in
1,504 cabins and has been called the real
"standard-bearer" of "Made in Italy" thanks
to her design, technology, industrialisation
and construction, requiring the
professional expertise of 3,000 workers
from Fincantieri and roughly 500 linked
industry companies for a total investment
of approximately US$729.7 million.
"The delivery of the Costa Pacifica is part
of the world's biggest [cruise line] expansion
plan, with five new ships to be delivered by
2012, and all built in Italy by Fincantieri, for
a total investment of US$3.5 billion,"
declared Pier Luigi Foschi, Chairman and
CEO of the Costa Crociere Group.
"'Costa Pacifica' further strengthens our
collaboration with Costa Cruises,'
commented Giuseppe Bono, Chief
Executive Officer, Fincantieri.
"Today, we -- as many other Italian
industries -- are going through a
particularly difficult period but we are
doing our utmost to keep these virtuous
circles which over the years have made us
world leaders and helped our suppliers
grow considerably both in quality and
quantity," he added.
With an overall length of 290.2 metres on
a 35.5--metre beam, the vessel has a depth of
8.2 metres and a draught of 8.3 metres.
'Costa Pacifica' has a diesel-electric
power plant with six Wärtsilä 12VA46C
diesel generator engines, each coupled to
an ASI alternator, and each rated
at 12,600kW. Twin Converteam
M31HXD-300-195/14 propulsion motors,
each rated at 21MW, drive twin
Rolls-Royce, five-bladed, high skew, fixed
pitch, 5,700mm-diameter propellers. Six
Fincantieri-DSC, 2.41m-diameter propeller
thrusters, three at the bow and three
aft, provide powerful manoeuvrability
and seakeeping. A single Isotta Fraschini
diesel engine coupled to a Marelli
alternator and rated at 1,500kW acts as
The vessel's speed is given as 20 knots.
The 'Costa Pacifica' was designed and
