The 11,700TEU containership ‘MSC
Luciana’, built at Hyundai Heavy
Industries (HHI), was delivered to MSC,
Italy in March, 2009.
The vessel has an overall length of 363
metres, a width of 45.6 metres and a depth
of 29.74 metres with a design draught of
14.0 metres. She is powered by the
powerful diesel Hyundai–B&W 12K98ME
engine, developing an MCR of 68,640kW at
94rpm which enables the ship to sail at a
service speed of 24.8 knots.

The vessel has ten holds, eight of
which are arranged forward of the engine
room (6m containers / 34 bays) and two
aft (6m containers / ten bays) and a
maximum of 16 rows and eleven tiers of
containers can be stowed in the holds.
Two air changes per hour are provided to
the entire hold.
The containership can carry a maximum
16 rows in holds and 18 rows on deck of
containers. Total TEU capacity is 11,312, of
which 5,844TEU is in holds and 5,468TEU
on deck, with 960FEU reefer sockets
provided. Pontoon type hatch covers close
the ten holds.
Each hatch cover is made up of four
panels with maximum panel weights kept
below 40 tonnes to suit handling by port
cranes. The vessel is arranged to carry 6m
(20ft); 12m (40ft); 13.5m (45ft) containers
and cargo holds are provided with
twelve-metre fixed cell guides.
